The process includes a first amorphous isomerization catalyst having a pore volume less than 0.99 ml/gm (H¿2?O), an alumina content in the of 30-50 wt% based on isomerization catalyst and an isolectric point in the range of 4.5 to 6.5. The isomerization step is followed by a catalytic dewaxing step using an intermediate pore crystalline molecular sieve. (EN)A process for preparing a lubricating oil basestock (43) having good low temperature properties is disclosed. The process includes contacting a feed (15) with a first amorphous isomerization catalyst (21) having a pore volume less than 0.99 ml/gm (H¿2?O), an alumina content in the range of 30-50 % based on the isomerization catalyst and an isoelectric point in the range of 4.5 to 6.5. The isomerization step is followed by a catalytic dewaxing step using an intermediate pore crystalline molecular sieve (39) to produce a product (43). A further embodiment includes a first amorphous isomerization catalyst having a pore volume less than 0.99 ml/gm (H¿2?O), an alumina content in the range of 30-50 % based on the isomerization catalyst wherein the silica is modified with a rare earth oxide, yttria, boria or magnesia and an isoelectric point greater than but no more than 2 points greater than that of the base silica alumina.
