Abstract:
(EN) A new shortstopping agent for use in stopping free radical polymerizations is N-ethylhydroxylamine or salts thereof (EHA). It is as effective as related hydroxylamines, but is much less volatile so that it tends to remain with the polymer rather than being substantially removed when unreacted monomer(s) is stripped off and recovered. EHA is not corrosive to metals used in commercial equipment for emulsion polymerizations and is expected not to make undesirable nitrosamine by-products.
(FR) Nouvel agent inhibiteur conçu pour arrêter la polymérisation des radicaux libres et consistant en N-éthylhydroxylamine ou certains de ses sels (EHA). Il est aussi efficace que les hydroxylamines apparentées, mais beaucoup moins volatil, de sorte qu'il tend à rester avec le polymère plutôt que d'en être pratiquement supprimé quand on enlève et qu'on récupère le monomère ou les monomères n'ayant pas subi de réaction. EHA n'est pas corrosif pour les métaux utilisés dans des installations commerciales de polymérisation d'émulsions et on pense qu'il ne laissera apparaître aucun produit secondaire indésirable de nitrosamine.
