Abstract:
(EN) A solid state laser source for surgical applications is disclosed which produces short-pulse, mid-infrared radiation. Specifically, the laser preferably emits radiation near the absorption peak of water, with energy levels up to 20 mJ, pulse durations shorter than 50 ns and preferably shorter than 30 ns, with beam quality of less than 8 times the diffraction limit. The short pulses reduce unwanted thermal effects and changes in adjacent tissue to potentially sub-micron levels. The laser source produces pulse repetition rates in excess of 10 Hz when pumped by a flashlamp, but in a diode pumped embodiment, the repetition rate may exceed 30 Hz. Of particular interest is an erbium-doped YAG laser which is especially well suited to the needs of mid-infrared corneal ablation procedures for correcting refractive errors, when constructed according to principles disclosed by the invention.
(FR) L'invention porte sur un laser solide à usage chirurgical émettant des impulsions courtes dans l'IR moyen, et particulièrement au voisinage du pic d'absorption de l'eau, avec des niveaux d'énergie atteignant 20 mJ, des impulsions de moins de 50 ns, et mieux, de 30 ns, et une qualité de faisceau de moins de 8 fois la limite de diffraction. Ces impulsions courtes réduisent les effets thermiques non désirés, et atteignent dans les tissus voisins des niveaux potentiels sub-microniques. Ledit laser présente une cadence de répétition des impulsions pouvant dépasser 10 Hz lorsqu'il est pompé par une lampe stroboscopique, et 30 Hz lorsqu'il est pompé par diode. Le laser YAG dopé à l'erbium est particulièrement bien adapté aux interventions d'ablation de la cornée par IR moyen visant à corriger des défauts de réfraction lorsqu'il est réalisé en suivant les principes exposés dans l'invention.
