A system provides a user interface for maximizing an amount of information presented on a computer generated display. The system includes a user interface management system (UMIS) that works with an operating system that manages the computer resources including a display screen and a user input device for tracking position. The UMIS is responsive to the user input device to effect changes in the computer generated display. The UMIS communicates with an application program using the user interface. The user interface has at least a first layer for displaying a primary dynamic image and a second layer for displaying a secondary dynamic image. The second layer has a plurality of display modes including a first mode corresponding to at least a portion of the second layer assuming an invisible state in the computer generated display. Selection of the display modes is effected by signals received from the user input device. Both the first and second layers are updated regardless of the mode of the second layer. The user interface is particularly applicable to air traffic control where the first layer is used for displaying a map plotting aircraft locations and the second layer is used for displaying various data concerning the aircraft, both being updated continuously.

L'interface-utilisateur de ce système permet de maximiser une information présentée sur un visuel commandé par ordinateur. Le système comporte un système de gestion d'interface-utilisateur (UIMS) fonctionnant avec un système d'exploitation gérant les ressources informatiques, dont un écran de visualisation et un périphérique d'entrée-utilisateur aux fins de la poursuite de position. L'UIMS réagit aux instructions du périphérique d'entrée-utilisateur et réalise les modifications sur le visuel commandé par ordinateur. Il communique avec un programme d'application utilisant l'interface-utilisateur. Celle-ci possède au moins une première couche pour l'affichage d'une image dynamique primaire et une seconde couche pour l'affichage d'une image dynamique secondaire. La seconde couche comporte plusieurs modes d'affichage dont un premier mode correspondant au moins à une partie de la seconde couche adoptant un état d'invisibilité dans le visuel commandé par ordinateur. La sélection des modes d'affichage est réalisée par des signaux provenant du périphérique d'entrée-utilisateur. Les deux couches sont actualisées sans qu'il soit tenu compte du mode de la seconde couche. Cet interface-utilisateur convient notamment au contrôle de la circulation aérienne, la première couche étant alors utilisée pour afficher un pointage de carte d'emplacements d'aéronefs et la seconde pour l'affichage de diverses données relatives à l'aéronef, les deux couches étant sans cesse actualisées.
