Abstract

A heat-resistant, thermally insulative, ductile port liner for a head of an internal combustion (IC) engine having a tube-shaped structure formed from at least one layer of fiber reinforced ceramic matrix composite (FRCMC) material. The FRCMC material includes a polymer-derived ceramic resin in its ceramic form and fibers. In a first embodiment of the port liner, the tube-shaped structure has one FRCMC layer forming the sole, solid wall of the structure. Whereas, in a second embodiment, the tube-shaped structure has two FRCMC layers forming inner and outer walls of the structure, respectively, with an intervening space separating the inner and outer walls. The intervening space is sealed at both ends. It can be filled with a thermally insulating material, evacuated and held at substantially a vacuum pressure, or filled with a gas. Once the port liner has been formed, it is preferably cast-in-place when the metal head of the IC engine is formed. This entails positioning the port liners within a mold designed to form the metal head in locations corresponding to the intake and exhaust ports of the head. Then, the mold is filled with molten metal to form the head with the port liners being integrally cast therewith.

L'invention concerne une chemise de lumières, ductile, thermo-isolante et résistant à la chaleur, pour une culasse de moteur à combustion interne ayant une structure tubulaire formée d'au moins une couche de matériau composite à matrice céramique renforcée par des fibres. Ledit matériau comprend une résine céramique dérivée d'un polymère sous sa forme céramique et des fibres. Dans un premier mode de réalisation de la chemise de lumière, la structure tubulaire comprend une couche de composite à matrice céramique renforcée par des fibres formant la seule paroi solide de la structure. Dans un deuxième mode de réalisation, la structure tubulaire comprend deux couches de composite à matrice céramique renforcée par des fibres formant respectivement les parois internes et externes de la structure, un espace intermédiaire séparant les parois interne et externe. L'espace intermédiaire est fermé aux deux extrémités. Il peut être rempli d'un matériau thermo-isolant, mis sous vide et maintenu à une pression sensiblement négative ou rempli d'un gaz. Une fois la chemise de la lumière formée, elle est, de préférence, moulée sur place lorsque la culasse en métal du moteur à combustion interne est formée. Pour ce faire, les chemises de lumières sont placées dans un moule conçu pour former la culasse métallique en des emplacements correspondant aux lumières d'admission et d'échappement de la culasse. Le moule est ensuite rempli de métal en fusion de sorte que la culasse soit formée, les chemises des lumières étant moulées d'une pièce avec cette dernière.
