An uninterruptible power supply is disclosed in which the backup energy source (31) is connected to the power supply (38) of the protected computer by way of a bi-directional power converter (33). This converter (33) operates without sensing circuitry, relays or switches, operating continuously when a load is present in either charging or discharging the backup energy source (31). This uninterruptible power supply can be placed within the available space of a functioning standard computer power supply enclosure (38), and may be configured so that it may be replaced during normal computer operation (i.e. it is 'hot swappable'). Methods are described to interface the uninterruptible power supply to the computer, providing mutual control and communication. The device may be also used to power devices requiring external DC power, which are commonly found in association with computer operations.

La présente invention concerne un système d'alimentation électrique sans interruption dans lequel la source d'énergie de réserve (31) est connectée à la source d'énergie (38) de l'ordinateur protégé au moyen d'un convertisseur d'énergie bidirectionnel (33). Ce convertisseur (33) fonctionne sans circuits de détection, ni relais ou commutateur, et fonctionnant de manière continue en présence d'une charge lors de la charge ou de la décharge de la source d'énergie de réserve (31). Ce système peut être placé dans l'espace disponible d'un boîtier d'alimentation en énergie d'un ordinateur standard opérationnel (38), et peut être configuré de façon à ce qu'il puisse être remplacé pendant le fonctionnement normal de l'ordinateur (c.a.d permettant le changement rapide). L'invention décrit également des procédés destinés à connecter ce système à l'ordinateur, et permettre la commande mutuelle et la communication.
