Abstract:
(EN) A method and apparatus for providing low-cost, realistic force feedback including an improved actuator. An interface device (14) is coupled to a host computer (12) allowing a user (22) to interact with a host application program with force sensations being provided to a user. An actuator (30) outputs forces on the user object (34) in response to signals from the host computer (12) and program. The actuator includes a housing, a set of grounded magnets provided on opposing surfaces of the housing and creating a magnetic field, and a rotor coupled to the user object positioned between the magnets. The teeth and the magnets are provided in a skewed, helical arrangement relative to each other so that, as the rotor rotates, a first tooth gradually exits the magnetic field as the next consecutive tooth gradually enters the magnetic field, thereby significantly reducing a cogging effect of the rotor.
(FR) L'invention concerne un procédé et un appareil incluant un actionneur perfectionné permettant de procurer, à moindre coût et de façon réaliste, un retour d'effort. Une interface (14) couplée à un ordinateur hôte (12) permet à un utilisateur (22) d'interagir avec un programme d'application hôte et de percevoir des sensations de force. Un actionneur (30) exerce des forces sur l'objet utilisateur (34) en réponse à des signaux provenant de l'ordinateur (12) et du programme hôtes. L'actionneur comporte un boîtier, un ensemble d'aimants mis à la masse, situés sur des surfaces opposées dudit boîtier et créant un champ magnétique, et un rotor relié à l'objet utilisateur disposé entre les aimants. Les dents et les aimants sont disposés de façon décalée et hélicoïdale l'un par rapport à l'autre de manière que, lorsque le rotor tourne, une première dent sorte du champ magnétique au fur et à mesure que la dent suivant y entre, ce qui réduit considérablement un effet de couple de pulsation du rotor.
