A method for producing an enhanced adsorbent and/or enhanced catalytic particle and/or for producing a catalytic particle, comprising the steps of: (a) removing an effective amount of air from a closed chamber containing an adsorbent and/or catalytic particle, wherein the resultant chamber pressure is less than one atmosphere; (b) raising the chamber pressure with an inert gas to at least one atmosphere; (c) contacting the particle with an energy beam of sufficient energy for a sufficient time to thereby enhance the adsorbent and/or catalytic properties of the particle and/or produce catalytic properties in the particle. A continuous process directed to step (c) alone is also provided. Also disclosed are adsorbent and/or catalytic particles, methods of contaminant reduction or elimination, including room temperature catalysis, particle binders, apparatuses of the present invention, and methods of increasing the surface area of adsorbent and/or catalytic particles.

Procédé de production d'une particule à propriétés améliorées d'adsorption et/ou de catalyse à température ambiante, et/ou de production d'une particule catalytique, qui consiste (a) à enlever une quantité efficace d'air d'une chambre fermée contenant une particule adsorbante et/ou catalytique, la pression résultante dans la chambre étant inférieure à une atmosphère, (b) à augmenter la pression dans la chambre avec un gaz inerte jusqu'à une atmosphère au moins, (c) à mettre en contact la particule avec un faisceau d'énergie suffisante et pendant un laps de temps suffisant pour améliorer les propriétés d'adsorption et/ou de catalyse de la particule et/ou conférer des propriétés catalytiques à la particule. Un procédé continu comportant l'étape (c) uniquement est également décrit. La présente invention concerne encore des particules adsorbantes et/ou catalytiques, des procédés de réduction ou d'élimination de contaminants, dont la catalyse à température ambiante, des liants de particules, des appareils selon la présente invention et des procédés permettant d'accroître l'aire de surface de particules adsorbantes et/ou catalytiques.
