This application provides a path establishment device and method for establishing a path for a telecommunications call. In a preferred embodiment, the path establishment device for this invention includes an originating call processor (130) in communication with an originating telecommunications network (120), a terminating call processor (150) in communication with the packet-based telecommunications network (140) and a public telecommunications network (160), and means for establishing a communication path from the originating telecommunications network (120) through the packet-based telecommunications network (140) to a destination served by the public telecommunications network (160). The path establishment device and method of the present invention thus provides, among other advantages, for the use of a potentially less expensive packet-switched telecommunications network as a long distance carrier between two public switched telecommunications networks.

Dispositif permettant d'établir une voie et procédé d'établissement d'une voie pour un appel de télécommunication. Dans un mode de réalisation préféré, le dispositif d'établissement de voie comporte un processeur (130) d'appels de départ en communication avec un réseau (120) de télécommunications de départ, un processeur (150) d'appels d'arrivée en communication avec le réseau (140) de télécommunications sur la base de paquets et un réseau (160) de télécommunications public, et des moyens permettant d'établir une voie de communication du réseau (120) de télécommunications de départ jusqu'à une destination desservie par le réseau (160) de télécommunications public, via le réseau (140) de télécommunications sur la base de paquets. Ledit dispositif d'établissement de voie et le procédé de la présente invention permettent, entre autres avantages, l'utilisation d'un réseau de télécommunications à commutation par paquets potentiellement moins cher en tant que porteuse à grande distance entre deux réseaux de télécommunications publics commutés.
