A method and apparatus for providing reduced drag on a body moving in a direction D through a selected fluid medium at a speed U which is normally sufficient to cause turbulence. Reduced drag is generally accomplished by flexing at least the outer surface of at least the rear third of the body to produce a wave-like motion of the body having a wavelength of between 0.5 and 2.0 times the length of the body, a reduced frequency value $g(V) between 0.1 and 0.5 and a time delay between successive points on the body reaching peaks for their flex motion which is directly proportional to the distance xi in the direction D of the point from a reference point on the body and inversely proportional to the phase speed cp of the wave. A variety of techniques are described for achieving the desired wave-like motion.

Méthode et appareil permettant de réduire la traînée d'un corps qui se déplace en un milieu fluide dans une direction D à une vitesse U qui est, en principe, suffisante pour provoquer des turbulences. Il est possible de réduire la traînée en infléchissant au moins la surface extérieure au moins dans le dernier tiers du corps afin de produire un mouvement ondulatoire de celui-ci; ledit mouvement a une longueur d'onde qui est de 0,5 à 2,0 fois celle du corps, une valeur de fréquence réduire $g(V) comprise entre 0,1 et 0,5 et un retard entre les points successifs du corps qui atteignent le maximum de leur mouvement flexible directement proportionnel à la distance xi, mesurée dans la direction D, entre le point concerné et un point de référence sur le corps et inversement proportionnel à la vitesse cp de l'onde. L'invention comporte une description de toute une série de techniques permettant de produire le mouvement ondulatoire désiré.
