Abstract

A novel and improved method and apparatus for switching the radio interface layer of a wireless telephone call from code division multiple access (CDMA) cellular to GSM time division multiple access (TDMA) cellular during the course of that telephone call or other communication is described. In accordance with one embodiment of the invention, a set of base stations (102) operating in accordance with the GSM standard generates pilot beacons signals in accordance with CDMA technology. During a phone call, a subscriber unit (101) detects CDMA pilot signals, and notifies a base station controller (106) when CDMA pilot signals are detected and the strength at which they are received. The base station controller (106) identifies CDMA pilot signals from CDMA pilot beacon (105), and initiates a CDMA to GSM handover.

Procédé et dispositif nouveaux et améliorés de commutation de la couche d'interface radio d'un appel téléphonique par voie hertzienne d'un système cellulaire à accès multiple par différence de code (AMDC) à un système cellulaire à accès multiple par répartition dans le temps (AMRT) pendant la durée de cet appel téléphonique ou d'une autre communication. Selon un mode de réalisation, un ensemble de stations de base (102) fonctionnant selon la norme GSM génère des signaux de balises pilotes conformément à la technologie AMDC. Pendant l'appel téléphonique, le poste de l'abonnée (101) détecte des signaux pilotes en AMDC et notifie un contrôleur (106) de station de base du moment où ces signaux pilotes en AMDC sont détectés en indiquant la puissance à laquelle ils sont reçus.
