A quadrature oscillator (152) includes an amplitude control circuit (154) that is based upon a trigonometric identity. The amplitude control circuit (154) includes two squaring circuits (174, 176), each receiving a respective quadrature oscillator signal. The outputs (182, 188) of the two squaring circuits are summed in a summing circuit (190), to produce a control signal (168) provided to damping diodes (Q84-Q87) coupled to the outputs of the quadrature oscillator (152). The damping diodes (Q84-Q87) provide a shunt positive resistance at the oscillator (152) outputs in response to the control signal (168) that has the effect of cancelling the shunt negative resistance of the oscillator (152), thereby controlling the oscillator amplitude.
