An intensity modulator (20) having a Mach-Zehnder structure with first (42) and second (44) waveguide arms formed of an electro-optic polymer. The active molecules of the waveguide arms are poled in first and second different and substantially orthogonal directions. Electrodes (64, 66, 68) are arranged to receive a modulating voltage and generate first and second electric fields which are respectively aligned with the first and second directions. As a consequence, the modulation depth of an optical signal which is transmitted through the modulator is substantially insensitive to the polarization of the signal. Other embodiments combine mode splitters and combiners with first and second Mach-Zehnder modulators which have electro-optic polymer waveguides. The active molecules of the arms of the two Mach-Zehnder modulators are poled in orthogonal directions.

Les molécules actives des bras guides d'ondes sont alignées dans des première et seconde directions différentes, sensiblement orthogonales. Les électrodes (64, 66, 68) sont disposées pour recevoir une tension de modulation et produire des premier et second champs électriques respectivement alignés avec les première et seconde directions. De ce fait, la profondeur de modulation d'un signal optique transmis par le modulateur est sensiblement non affectée par la polarisation du signal. Dans d'autres modes de réalisation, des séparateurs et mélangeurs de modes sont combinés avec des premier et second modulateurs de Mach-Zehnder munis de guides d'ondes électro-optiques polymères.
