A method of bonding a titanium article to another metal article using a superplastic interlayer is disclosed. A fine-grain titanium alloy interlayer is provided between faying surfaces of the articles to be bonded. The interlayer has an alpha-beta microstructure and an average grain size of less than about 1-3 microns (.001-.003 mm) in at least one plane. The articles to joined and the interlayer are heated to between 1000 °F (538 °C) and 1500 °F (816 °C). A sufficiently large compressive force is then applied to the articles to cause superplastic deformation of the interlayer and bonding of the articles.

L'invention concerne un procédé pour joindre un article en titane à un article en un autre métal faisant appel à une couche intermédiaire supraélastique. Une mince couche intermédiaire en alliage de titane à grains fins est placée entre les surfaces se faisant face des articles à joindre ensemble. La couche intermédiaire a une microstructure alpha-bêta et une granulométrie moyenne inférieure à 1-3 microns (0,001 - 0,003 mm) au moins dans un plan. Les articles à joindre ensemble et la couche intermédiaire sont chauffés entre 1000 °F (538°) et 1500 °F (816°C). Une force de compression suffisamment importante est ensuite appliquée aux articles pour provoquer une déformation supraélastique de la couche intermédiaire et l'adhésion des articles.
