A contact structure, useful as a distillation structure, has a rigid frame made of two substantially vertical duplicate grids (22) spaced apart and held rigid by a plurality of substantially horizontal rigid members (20) and a plurality of substantially horizontal wire mesh tubes (10) mounted to the grids to form a plurality of fluid pathways among the tubes. For use as a catalytic distillation structure, which serves as both the distillation structure and the catalyst, at least a portion of the wire mesh tubes contain a particulate catalytic material (30). The catalyst within the tubes provides a reaction zone where catalytic reactions may occur and the wire mesh provides mass transfer surfaces to effect a fractional distillation. The spacing elements provide for a variation of the catalyst density and loading and structural integrity.

Une structure de contact, utile en tant que structure de distillation, comporte un bâti rigide constitué d'une part de deux grilles jumelées (22), espacées l'une de l'autre, sensiblement verticales et maintenues de façon à constituer une structure rigide par une pluralité d'éléments rigides (20) sensiblement horizontaux et d'autre part d'une pluralité de tubes en treillis métallique (10) sensiblement horizontaux, fixés aux grilles de façon à constituer une pluralité de passages pour fluides. Afin de servir de structure catalytique de distillation, c'est à dire à la fois de structure de distillation et de catalyseur, une partie au moins des tubes en treillis métallique contient une matière catalytique particulaire (30). Le catalyseur présent dans les tubes fournit une zone réactionnelle où les réactions catalytiques peuvent prendre place et le treillis métallique offre des surfaces de transfert de masse permettant d'effectuer une distillation fractionnée. Les éléments d'écartement permettent de faire varier la densité du catalyseur ainsi que l'intégrité structurale et de chargement.
