(EN)A process for making a 1,2-dioxolane of formula (1), which comprises reacting a dienoic acid or derivative of formula (2), with a peroxy compound in the presence of a mercury salt followed by demercuration wherein R is aryl, aralkyl, C¿1-30?-alkyl or alkenyl which may be substituted; R?1¿ and R?2¿ are each, independently, hydrogen, C¿1-6?-alkyl, aralkyl or R?1¿ and R together with the carbon atom to which they are attached form a ring; R?3¿ is -OR?4¿ or -NR?5¿R?6¿; R?4¿ is hydrogen, C¿1-6?-alkyl, aryl or aralkyl; and R?5¿ and R?6¿ are each, independently, hydrogen, C¿1-6?-alkyl, aralkyl or R?5¿ and R?6¿ together with the nitrogen atom to which they are attached form a ring.
