A combination of a preprinted pressure sensitive label (12) and an electronic article security system target (13) is provided, preferably as a supply (30) of labels (12) on a backing material web (32) with the target (13) between. The labels preferably extend at least about 1/8th inch around the edge of the target to directly adhere to articles of merchandise (10). Articles (10) may be selectively marked with targets (13) so concealed to deter theft with fewer targets (13). Target and label combinations (20) may be formed by applying first the target (13), then the label (12), to the article (10). Preferably, label and target combinations (20) are supplied on a web (32) and are then applied to the articles (10). Combination label and target supplies (30) may be formed by separating preprinted labels (12) from their backing material webs (36), applying the targets (13) to either the label (12) or the backing material (36), and then combining the label with either the same backing material web (36) or a different one. With discrete cut labels on a backing web (36), pressure sensitive adhesive coated targets (13) are applied to web (32) and pressure sensitive labels (12) are applied over them. For high speed production, targets (13) are applied to the adhesive side of an uncut label web (97) that has been separated from its backing material (96), then relaminating the resulting combination web onto the same or a different backing material web. Discharges of electrostatic charge that could damage the target circuit are reduced by using rollers and peeling knives made of non-electrically conductive materials to contact the markers or targets and by using ionized gas to neutralize the charge.

En production rapide, les cibles (13) sont appliquées au côté adhésif d'une bande d'étiquette non coupée (97) qui a été séparée de son support (96), puis la combinaison obtenue est placée en superposition sur la même bande ou sur une bande de support différente. On limite les décharges électrostatiques qui pourraient endommager les circuits des cibles par l'utilisation de rouleaux et de lames de séparation fabriqués en matériaux non conducteurs et venant en contact avec les cibles ou marqueurs, et au moyen de gaz ionisés afin de neutraliser la charge.
