A communications system and method is provided in which data is transmitted between a plurality of nodes (A, B, C, D) in a network comprising a closed loop configuration of one or more pairs of unidirectional transmission rings (1, 2) arranged to transmit data in opposite directions around the rings. Each node includes a respective message processor (5, 6) for each of the transmission rings (1, 2) and a host processor (60) linked to the message processors (5, 6). The traffic of data in each ring is dynamically monitored to obtain traffic information which is utilized by the message processors in accordance with a traffic control process to select one of the rings to transmit data from an originating node to a destination node. In the event of a fault in one of the rings, the other ring is utilized to transmit data at a reduced performance level while repairs are made to the faulty ring.

L'invention concerne un système de communication et un procédé de communication, où des données sont transmises entre une pluralité de noeuds (A, B, C, D) dans un réseau comprenant une configuration de boucle fermée d'un ou de plusieurs paires d'anneaux de transmission unidirectionnels (1,2) prévus pour transmettre des données dans les directions opposées autour des anneaux. Chaque noeud comprend un processeur de messages respectifs (5, 6) pour chaque anneau de tramsmission (1, 2) et un processeur hôte (60) lié aux processeurs (5, 6) des messages. Le trafic de données dans chaque anneau est surveillé dynamiquement pour obtenir une information de trafic qui est utilisée par le processeur de messages conformément au procédé de commande de trafic pour sélectionner un des anneaux, afin de transmettre des données d'un noeud d'origine à un noeud de destination. En cas d'erreur dans un des anneaux, l'autre anneau est utilisé pour transmettre des données à un niveau de performance réduit, pendant que les réparations sont faites sur l'anneau défectueux.
