An improved fiber reinforced glass composite includes a boron-containing refractory fiber having its surface enriched with boron nitride in a matrix of a black glass ceramic having the empirical formula SiCxOy where x ranges from about 0.5 to about 2.0, preferably 0.9 to 1.6 and y ranges from about 0.5 to 3.0, preferably 0.7 to 1.8. Preferably the black glass ceramic is derived from cyclosiloxane or non-cyclic siloxane monomers containing a vinyl group attached to silicon and/or a hydride-silicon group. The boron nitride-containing fiber is the product of treating the boron-containing fiber with ammonia at a temperature between about 1100 °C and 1250 °C. Fibrous failure rather than brittle failure under stress can be obtained.

L'invention porte sur un composite verre, renforcé par des fibres, comprenant une fibre réfractaire dont la surface est enrichie au nitrure de bore de formule moléculaire SiCxOy. Dans cette formule, x est compris entre environ 0,5 et environ 2,0, de préférence entre 0,9 et 1,6 et y, entre environ 0,5 et environ 3,0, de préférence entre 0,7 et 1,8. La céramique de verre noir est dérivée, de préférence, de monomères de cyclosiloxane ou de siloxane non cyclique, comportant un groupe vinyle attaché à un groupe silicium et/ou à un groupe hydrure de silicium. Cette fibre contenant du nitrure de bore est issue du traitement d'une fibre contenant du nitrure de bore par de l'ammoniaque, à une température comprise entre 1100 et 1250 °C, donnant un produit pouvant présenter, lorsqu'il est soumis à une contrainte, une rupture fragile plutôt qu'une rupture fibreuse.
