Processes for selecting, manipulating and arranging data points or pixels derived from information bearing signals are useful to reduce the bandwidth of, or improve the perceived quality of, such a signal as transmitted and displayed. The techniques utilize time-varying sampling schemes and take into account the characteristics of the human visual system. For each information frame, a subset (3) of all possible data points (1) is selected (2). A further subset of active data points (5) is selected (4) for which data will actually be sampled. The active points (5) are further divided (6) into points for which a value will be transmitted (x-points) (7) and points which will be sampled but for which no separate value will be transmitted (o-points) (8). A mathematical association between the x-points and o-points is made (9) and new values to be transmitted are calculated for the x-points (10). The parameters of the selection and association processes are varied in a non-trivial manner and the, now modified, cycle repeated (11) for subsequent data frames. In particular, the techniques may be used to process a high-definition television signal prior to its storage, or transmission over a low-bandwidth channel.

Procédés permettant de sélectionner, de manipuler et de disposer des points de données ou des pixels provenant de signaux porteurs d'informations et de réduire la largeur de bande de ce signal, ou d'en améliorer la qualité de perception, tel qu'il est transmis et affiché. Ces techniques mettent en application des méthodes d'échantillonnage variable dans le temps et prennent en considération les caractéristiques du système visuel de l'homme. Pour chaque bloc d'informations, on sélectionne (2) un sous-ensemble (3) de tous les points de données (1) possibles. On sélectionne (4) un autre sous-ensemble de points de données actifs (5), pour lesquels des données seront réellement échantillonnées. Ces points actifs (5) sont encore divisés (6) en points, pour lesquels une valeur sera transmise (points x) (7), ainsi qu'en points qui seront échantillonnés mais pour lesquels aucune valeur séparée ne sera transmise (points o) (8). On procède à une association mathématique entre les points x et les points o (9) et on calcule de nouvelles valeurs à transmettre pour les points x (10). On modifie les paramètres des processus d'association et de sélection de façon sophistiquée et on répète le cycle modifié (11) pour les blocs de données suivants. On peut utiliser ces techniques, en particulier, afin de traiter un signal de télévision à haute définition avant sa mémorisation ou sa transmission par l'intermédiaire d'un canal à faible largeur de bande.
