A method and apparatus for establishing an intelligent demarcation between facility and terminal segments of asynchronous optical network. Network management information contained with the overhead structure of the synchronous optical network signal is extracted and manipulated in accordance with a predetermined user specification; overhead data may be translated, terminated, or passed unaltered as required. Overhead processing towards the facility and terminal segments need not be symmetrical. Payload information is passed unaltered although future provisions for encrypting payload data exist. Full performance monitoring is supported along with a built-in-test and diagnostic capability. The device may be both locally and remotely controlled and monitored. Remote control is implemented via the overhead information contained within the synchronous optical network signal.

Appareil et procédé permettant d'établir une démarcation intelligente entre les segments de ligne et de terminal d'un réseau optique asynchrone. Les informations de gestion de réseau contenues dans la structure de surdébit du signal de réseau optique synchrone sont extraites et traitées selon une spécification d'utilisateur prédéterminée; les données en surdébit peuvent être traduites, arrêtées ou transférées sans modification suivant ce qui est souhaité. Les informations en charge utile sont transmises sans modification, même si des dispositions permettant de chiffrer les données en charge utile par la suite existent. Le contrôle de performance complet est assuré, en association avec une capacité de test intégré et de diagnostic. Le dispositif peut être commandé et contrôlé localement ou à distance. La commande à distance est mise en oeuvre au moyen de l'information contenue dans le signal de réseau optique synchrone.
