An improved method for the recovery of xanthophylls from corn gluten is provided. More specifically, a method for the recovery of xanthophylls from corn gluten whereby relatively dry corn gluten is extracted with an organic alcohol followed by a saponification reaction to convert xanthophyll esters to xanthophylls is described. Using this method, xanthophylls can be recovered from corn gluten in higher yields, greater efficiencies, and higher purity as to compare to prior art methods. Moreover, the xanthophyll product recovered in this method is a crystalline, powdery solid ideally suited for use in food products and pharmaceuticals. This material is especially suited for use in poultry feeds to provide the desired, healthy yellow color or hue in broiler and egg yolks.

L'invention concerne une amélioration apportée à un procédé de récupération de xantophylles à partir de gluten de maïs, et en particulier un procédé de récupération de xantophylles à partir de gluten de maïs, consistant à extraire le gluten de maïs relativement sec avec un alcool organique puis à convertir par une réaction de saponification les esters de xantophylle en xantophylles. Ce procédé permet de récupérer des xantophylles à partir de gluten de maïs avec un rendement supérieur, une plus grande efficacité et une plus grande pureté par rapport aux procédés de la technique antérieure. En outre, le produit de xantophylle récupéré selon ce procédé est une matière solide cristalline pulvérulente se prêtant de façon idéale à des applications dans les produits alimentaires et pharmaceutiques. Cette matière est particulièrement appropriée pour des applications dans les aliments pour volailles, où elle permet d'obtenir la couleur ou la teinte jaune, saine, souhaitée, dans les poulets à griller et les jaunes d'÷ufs.
