A data storage process which includes an erasable, high density, storage medium (7) having a transition metal oxide layer where the oxide layer is capable of undergoing an optically readable chemical change when simultaneously exposed to heat and to light of a selected wavelength. An optically readable image is formed in selected regions of the oxide layer under ambient conditions which include O2 by simultaneously exposing the layer to heat and to radiation in the blue-green or shorter wavelength spectrum. The image is erased by heating the entire medium using a furnace or by heating selected portions with IR radiation.

Cette invention concerne un procédé de stockage de données selon lequel on utilise un support de données effaçable, de haute densité (7), possédant une couche intermédiaire d'oxyde métallique capable de subir une modification chimique optiquement lisible quand elle est exposée simultanément à la chaleur et à la lumière d'une longueur d'onde donnée. On obtient une image optiquement lisible dans les régions sélectionnées de la couche d'oxyde, dans les conditions ambiantes y compris O2, en exposant la couche simultanément à la chaleur et à un rayonnement situé dans le spectre bleu-vert ou de longueur d'onde inférieure. On efface l'image en chauffant le support entier au moyen d'un four ou en chauffant des parties sélectionnées grâce à un rayonnement infra-rouge.
