The present invention provides methods for treating $i(Pneumocystis carinii) pneumonia. The method comprises administering to the subject a compound of formula (I), wherein: X is located in the $i(para) or $i(meta) positions and is loweralkyl, loweralkoxy, alkoxyalkyl, hydroxyalkyl, aminoalkyl, alkylaminoalkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, alkylaryl, halogen, or (II) wherein each R2 is independently selected from the group consisting of H, loweralkyl, alkoxyalkyl, hydroxyalkyl, aminoalkyl, alkylaminoalkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, or alkylaryl or two R2 groups together represent C2-C10 alkylene, or two R2 groups together represent (III) wherein m is from 1-3 and R4 is H, (IV) or -CONHR5NR6R7, wherein R5 is loweralkyl, R6 and R7 are each independently selected from the group consisting of H and lower alkyl; each R8 is independently selected from the group consisting of H, loweralkyl, alkoxyalkyl, hydroxyalkyl, aminoalkyl, alkylaminoalkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, or alkylaryl, or two R8 groups together represent C2-C10 alkylene; R9 is H, hydroxy, loweralkyl, alkoxyalkyl, hydroxyalkyl, aminoalkyl, alkylaminoalkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, or alkylaryl; R3 is H, hydroxy, loweralkyl, alkoxyalkyl, hydroxyalkyl, aminoalkyl, alkylaminoalkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, or alkylaryl; R1 is H, loweralkyl, alkoxyalkyl, hydroxyalkyl, aminoalkyl, alkylaminoalkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, alkylaryl, or halogen; or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof.

L'invention se rapporte à des procédés qui concernent le traitement de la pneumonie à $i(Pneumocystis carinii). Le traitement consiste à administrer aux patients un composé de la formule (I) ou bien un sel pharmaceutiquement acceptable de celui-ci. Dans ladite formule (I), X occupe les positions $i(para) ou $i(meta) et représente alkyle inférieur, alcoxy inférieur, alcoxyalkyle, hydroxyalkyle, aminoalkyle, alkylaminoalkyle, cycloalkyle, aryle, alkylaryle, halogène, ou (II), où chaque R2 est choisi de manière indépendante dans le groupe qui comprend H, alkyle inférieur, alcoxyalkyle, hydroxyalkyle, aminoalkyle, alkylaminoalkyle, cycloalkyle, aryle, ou alkylaryle; ou bien encore deux groupes R2 pris ensemble représentent alkylène C2-C10, ou deux groupes R2 pris ensemble représentent (III), où la valeur de m va de 1 à 3 et où R4 représente H, (IV) ou bien -CONHR5NR6R7, où R5 est alkyle inférieur, R6 et R7 sont choisis chacun de manière indépendante dans le groupe qui comprend H et alkyle inférieur, chaque R8 est choisi de manière indépendante dans le groupe qui comprend H, alkyle inférieur, alcoxyalkyle, hydroxyalkyle, aminoalkyle, alkylaminoalkyle, cycloalkyle, aryle, ou alkylaryle, ou bien encore deux groupes R8 pris ensemble représentent alkylène C2-C10, R9 est H, hydroxy, alkyle inférieur, alcoxyalkyle, hydroxyalkyle, aminoalkyle, alkylaminoalkyle, cycloalkyle, aryle ou alkylaryle, R3 est H, hydroxy, alkyle inférieur, alcoxyalkyle, hydroxyalkyle, aminoalkyle, alkylaminoalkyle, cycloalkyle, aryle ou alkylaryle, R1 est H, alkyle inférieur, alcoxyalkyle, hydroxyalkyle, aminoalkyle, alkylaminoalkyle, cycloalkyle, aryle, alkylaryle ou halogène.
