An excess air factor detecting device for repeatedly detecting the excess air factor of an air-fuel mixture supplied to an engine (1) having an exhaust gas recirculating device during recirculation of exhaust gas based on the running condition of the engine; and a controlling device employing the detecting device. The intake pressure of the engine is detected, and the volume of refluxed gas is estimated based on at least the detected intake pressure. The equivalent intake fresh air volume of the engine is estimated by an equivalent intake fresh air volume estimating means, the excess air factor of the engine is estimated based on the fuel supply volume and the estimated equivalent intake fresh air volume, and the estimated excess air factor is stored in a memory means. The volume of refluxed exhaust gas is estimated by the equivalent intake fresh air volume estimating means based on at least the estimated volume of refluxed exhaust gas and the excess air factors stored in the memory means and estimated a predetermined number of times earlier, and the fuel supply volume and/or circulating exhaust gas volume are (is) regulated using the estimated excess air factor to thereby control the excess air factor to a target value.

L'invention porte sur un dispositif répétitif de détection du taux d'air en excès dans le mélange air/carburant alimentant un moteur (1) comportant un système de recirculation des gaz d'échappement agissant en fonction des conditions de fonctionnement du moteur; elle porte également sur un dispositif de régulation utilisant ledit dispositif de détection. On mesure la pression d'admission puis on estime le volume du gaz refluant en fonction au moins de la pression d'admission détectée. Le volume équivalent d'air frais d'admission du moteur est estimé par un moyen d'estimation du volume d'air frais d'admission, le facteur d'air en excès est estimé en fonction du volume de carburant fourni et du volume équivalent d'air frais d'admission estimé, puis il est stocké dans une mémoire. Le volume de gaz d'échappement refluant est estimé à l'aide du moyen d'estimation du volume d'air frais d'admission en fonction au moins du volume estimé de gaz d'échappement ayant reflué et des taux d'air en excès emmagasinés dans la mémoire lors d'un certain nombre de cycles antérieurs, et le volume de carburant fourni et/ou le volume des gaz d'échappement en circulation est (sont) régulé(s) à l'aide du taux estimé d'air en excès pour amener ce dernier à une valeur prescrite.
