A bistable magnetic actuator which has an armature which is moveable between a first bistable position and a second bistable position, and which has a first driving coil for driving the armature from the first to the second bistable position when the coil is energised and a second driving coil for driving the armature from the second to the first bistable position when the coil is energised. The actuator includes a first control means which energises the non-driving coil as a braking coil to partially oppose the magnetic driving force of the driving coil, during at least part of the period when the driving coil is being energised. This enables a high degree of control to be exercised over precisely when, and how fast the armature starts moving. By varying the power applied to the braking coil, it is possible to vary the velocity of the armature during its stroke, thereby rendering it possible to operate dual circuit breaking devices which require a combination of short fast stroke and long slow stroke sequentially within one actuation event.

Cette invention concerne un actionneur magnétique bistable comportant une armature mobile entre des première et deuxième positions bistables et une première bobine d'entraînement qui sert à faire passer l'armature de la première à la deuxième position bistable lorsque la bobine est excitée et une deuxième bobine d'entraînement qui sert à faire passer l'armature de la deuxième à la première position bistable lorque la bobine est excitée. L'actionneur comprend un premier dispositif de commande qui excite la bobine non entraînante comme une bobine de frein pour s'opposer partiellement à la force d'entraînement magnétique de la bobine d'entraînement, pendant au moins une partie de la période pendant laquelle la bobine d'entraînement est excitée. Ceci permet de contrôler avec une très grande précision le moment où l'armature commence à bouger et la vitesse à laquelle elle bouge. Si on fait varier la puissance appliquée sur la bobine de frein, on peut faire varier la vitesse de l'armature pendant sa course et il est alors possible de faire fonctionner des dispositifs de coupe-circuit doubles qui nécessitent une combinaison séquencée de course rapide courte et de course lente longue pendant un actionnement.
