A cellulose acetate which, despite the high average degree of polymerization, has a low solution viscosity and a high moldability.The low-molecular-weight fraction of cellulose acetate (such as CTA having an average degree of acetylation of 59.0 to 62.5 %) is eluted with a washing solvent to prepare cellulose acetate having a molecular weight distribution Mw/Mn of 1 to 1.7. The washing solvent may be any solvent capable of swellling or partially dissolving cellulose acetate, for example, a solvent capable of dissolving 0.1 to 30 % by weight of celllulose acetate. Examples of such solvents include ones having a solubility parameter $g(d) of 7 to 12.5 (such as ketones, ethers, organic acids, and esters).

Acétate de cellulose présentant une faible viscosité en solution et une bonne aptitude au moulage en dépit d'un degré moyen élevé de polymérisation. La fraction de faible masse molaire de l'acétate de cellulose (tel que du CTA présentant un degré d'acétylation compris entre 59,0 et 62,5 %) est éluée avec un solvant de lavage pour préparer de l'acétate de cellulose possédant une distribution de la masse molaire Mw/Mn comprise entre 1 et 1,7. Le solvant de lavage peut être n'importe quel solvant capable de faire gonfler ou de dissoudre partiellement l'acétate de cellulose, tel que par exemple un solvant capable de dissoudre entre 0.1 et 30 % en poids d'acétate de cellulose. Parmi les solvants appropriés on trouve ceux dont le paramètre de solubilité $g(d) est compris entre 7 et 12,5 (comme les cétones, les éthers, les acides organiques et les esters).
