A method and apparatus for continuously or repeatedly monitoring road surface friction utilizes a separate test wheel (101) attached to a vehicle and in contact with a road surface and a device for detecting slippage of the test wheel (101) resulting from applying either a braking or accelerating torque on the test wheel (101). A signal corresponding to the applied braking or accelerating torque at the moment slip is detected and used to provide an indication to the driver of the slip condition. The method and apparatus is useful in vehicles as well as aircraft or in other applications where it is desired to monitor road friction.

Cette invention se rapporte à un procédé et à un appareil, qui servent à contrôler de façon continue ou à intervalles répétés le frottement à la surface de la route et qui utilisent à cet effet une roue de test (101) séparée fixée à un véhicule et se trouvant en contact avec la surface de la route, ainsi qu'un dispositif pour détecter le patinage de la roue de test (101) à la suite de l'application soit d'un couple de freinage soit d'un coupe d'accélération sur la roue de test (101). Un signal correspondant au couple de freinage ou d'accélération appliqué au moment du patinage est détecté et utilisé pour fournir au conducteur une indication sur les risques de patinage des roues étant donné l'état de la route. Ce procédé et cet appareil sont utiles dans les véhicules et les avions ou dans d'autres applications où l'on souhaite contrôler le frottement des roues sur une surface.
