A phase changing type optical medium (1) on which information is recorded by irradiating the medium with light and which is constituted by successively forming a first protective layer, a recording layer, a second protective layer, and a reflecting layer on a transparent substrate, (2) the first protective layer of which has a thickness which falls within a range of 30 ± nm within which the reflectivity is the minimum when the protective layer is irradiated with light from the transparent substrate side, and (3) the second protective layer of which has an adsorption coefficient meeting the inequality, 0.05 « k « 2.5. The variation of the shape and size of recording pits can be reduced regardless of whether the state of the recording layer before recording is a crystalline state or an amorphous state. Therefore, the optical recording medium has an improved erase ratio, less jitter, and an excellent error rate.

Support optique à variation de phase (1) sur lequel des informations sont enregistrées par irradiation du support avec de la lumière. On produit ledit support par étapes successives, en formant une première couche de protection, une couche d'enregistrement, une seconde couche de protection et une couche réfléchissante sur une substrat transparent, (2) la première couche de protection présentant une épaisseur de l'ordre de ± 30 nm avec une réflectivité minimum lorsque celle-ci est irradiée par de la lumière depuis le côté substrat transparent, et (3) la seconde couche de protection présentant un coefficient d'absorption correspondant à 0,05 « k « 2,5. On peut réduire la variation de la forme et de la taille des microcuvettes d'enregistrement, que la couche d'enregistrement avant l'enregistrement soit à l'état cristallin ou amorphe. Ainsi, le support d'enregistrement optique présente un rapport d'effacement accru, moins de gigue et un taux d'erreurs excellent.
