Abstract

A lithium ion battery comprising a negative electrode, a non-aqueous solvent and a positive electrode having LiV2O5 admixed with a conductive material. The conductive material is preferably carbon in an amount ranging from about 2 percent to 20 percent by weight of the positive electrode. Ten percent by weight is preferred. The LiV2O5 is formed by discharging an admixture of V2O5 and the conductive material in an electrochemical reactor with a lithium metal negative electrode and having an electrolyte salt in a non-aqueous solvent to reduce by one Faraday per mole of V2O5 the admixture to convert all of the V2O5. The cell is preferably discharged to about 2.8 volts to form the LiV2O5 positive electrode which is then removed and formed into a predetermined electrode configuration for use as a positive electrode in a cell without lithium metal present.

Batterie à ions lithium comprenant une électrode négative, un solvant non aqueux et une électrode positive comportant du LiV2O5 mélangé à une matière conductrice. Cette dernière est constituée de préférence de carbone en une quantité comprise entre environ 2 % et environ 20 % en poids de l'électrode positive, de préférence 10 % en poids. On forme le LiV2O5 en déversant un mélange de V2O5 et de matière conductrice dans un réacteur électrochimique avec une électrode négative en lithium métallique, où un sel électrolyte dans un solvant non aqueux réduit ledit mélange d'un Faraday par mole de V2O5 afin de convertir la totalité du V2O5. L'élément est déchargé de préférence à environ 2,8 volts pour former l'électrode positive en LiV2O5, que l'on enlève ensuite pour lui donner une forme d'électrode prédéterminée afin de l'utiliser comme électrode positive dans un élément dépourvu de lithium métallique.
