A power-saving method for driving an LCD device (20), include a series of multiplexers (78, 80, 82) coupled to the columns (46, 49, 51) of the display (20). The multiplexers selectively couple each of the columns to a common external storage capacitor (66) during a portion of each row drive period for discharging each of the pixels in the selected row of the LCD (20) to a median bias voltage. During the remaining portion of each row drive period, the multiplexers (78, 80, 82) selectively couple voltage drivers (76, 84, 86) to the columns (46, 49, 51) of the LCD for applying a desired driving voltage to each column having alternating-polarity driving voltages. For active matrix LCD panels, a multiplexer (124) selectively couples the backplane (130) of the display panel to either an external storage capacitor (134) or to an alternating-polarity backplane driving voltage (122) during each row drive period.

Procédé d'attaque d'un affichage à cristaux liquides (20) permettant d'économiser de l'énergie. Le circuit comprend une série de multiplexeurs (78, 80, 82) couplés aux colonnes (46, 49, 51) de l'affichage. Les multiplexeurs couplent sélectivement chacune des colonnes à un condensateur d'accumulation extérieur commun (66) pendant une partie de chaque période d'attaque de rangée, afin de décharger chacun des pixels de la rangée sélectionnée de l'affichage à cristaux liquides (20) vers une tension de polarisation moyenne. Pendant la partie restante de chaque période d'attaque de rangée, les multiplexeurs (78, 80, 82) couplent sélectivement des circuits d'attaque (76, 84, 86) aux colonnes (46, 49, 51) de l'affichage à cristaux liquides, afin d'appliquer une tension d'attaque souhaitée à chaque colonne du groupement, les tensions d'attaque étant de polarité alternée. Pour des panneaux d'affichage à cristaux liquides à matrice active, un multiplexeur (124) couple sélectivement la partie arrière (13) du panneau d'affichage, soit à un condensateur d'accumulation extérieur (134), soit à une tension d'attaque de panneau arrière à polarité alternée (122) pendant chaque période d'attaque de rangée.
