Abstract

A polarization independent tunable filter/receiver for optical communications. The tunable filter, operating as a directional coupler, has three waveguides including a central, feedguide (32) and a pair of branch waveguides (34, 36). Through either electro-optic effects or free carrier injection, the TM and TE polarization modes of the central wavelength can be coupled from the feedguide (32) to the appropriate branch guide. The separated modes can be either detected independently (40, 42) or reunited in phase for further processing.

On décrit un filtre/récepteur, accordable et indépendant de la polarisation, destiné aux communications optiques. Ce filtre accordable, fonctionnant comme un coupleur directionnel, comprend trois guides d'ondes, y compris un guide central d'alimentation (32) et une paire de guides d'ondes dérivés (34, 36). Par des effets électro-optiques ou injection de porteurs libres, les modes de polarisation TM (transversale magnétique) et TE (transversale électrique) de la longueur d'onde centrale peuvent être couplés depuis le guide d'alimentation (32) vers le guide dérivé approprié. Ces modes séparés peuvent être détectés indépendamment (40, 42) ou réunis en phase en vue d'un traitement ultérieur.
