The presence of Semtex plastic explosive in a sample such as a fingerprint is detected by Raman spectroscopy. RDX and PETN, the active chemical ingredients of Semtex, have strong Raman peaks at 885 cm-1 and 874 cm-1 respectively. Consequently, both these peaks can be detected in a Raman spectroscopic system by employing a filter (28) having a narrow passband centred on 880 cm-1 and with a bandwidth of 20 cm-1. Such a filter is used in a Raman system used to scan airport boarding cards (10), or in a Raman microscope which produces images of fingerprints.

On détecte par spectroscopie Raman la présence d'un explosif plastique, le Semtex, dans un échantillon tel qu'une empreinte digitale. Les ingrédients chimiques actifs du Semtex, le RDF (cyclotriméthylène-trinitramine) et le PETN (pentaérythriol-tétranitrate) présentant des pics Raman marqués à 885 et 874 cm-1 respectivement. On peut donc détecter ces deux pics dans un spectroscope Raman en utilisant un filtre (28) doté d'une bande passante étroite centrée sur 880 cm-1 et d'une largeur de bande de 20 cm-1. Ce filtre, utilisé avec un spectroscope Raman, permet la lecture des cartes d'embarquement (10) dans les aéroports, et avec un microscope Raman, il produit des images d'empreintes digitales.
