A scanning arrangement comprising means (40) for projecting a two-dimensional optical pattern on a surface (35) of a scanned object and a two-dimensional photodetector (34') is mounted within a hand-held scanning device and outputs scan files of 3D coordinate data of overlapping surface portions of the object. The surface portions defined by these scan files are registered by appropriate rotations and translations in a computer, which are determined either from the outputs of a gyroscope (51) and an accelerometer (50) or by mathematical processing of the surface portions e.g. involving detection and location of common features.

Dispositif de balayage comprenant des moyens (40) destinés à projeter un modèle optique bidimensionnel sur une surface (35) d'un objet balayé; un photodétecteur (34') de formes bidimensionnelles est monté dans le dispositif de balayage portatif et produit des fichiers de balayage de données de coordonnées tridimensionnelles des portions de surface de l'objet qui se chevauchent. Les portions de surface déterminées par ces fichiers de balayage sont enregistrées dans un ordinateur à l'aide de rotations et de translations appropriées qui sont déterminées soit à partir de valeurs de sortie d'un gyroscope (51) et d'un accéléromètre (50), soit à partir d'un traitement mathématique des portions de surface impliquant, par exemple, la détection et le repérage de caractéristiques communes.
