The present invention is particularly well suited for purifying exhaust from relatively large lean burn diesel engines. A computer controlled injector (20) intermittently injects an optimal amount of NOx reducing fluid into the exhaust passageway (11) from the engine (12). The optimal amount corresponds to an amount that will achieve optimal NOx reduction rates for the given engine operating condition and exhaust temperature. A computer (16) periodically senses the engine operating condition and the exhaust temperature, and calculates the appropriate injection amount. With appropriate deNOx and oxidation catalysts located downstream from the injector (20), the exhaust purification system (10) of the present invention has the ability to greatly reduce NOx content of the exhaust while maintaining HC emissions at acceptable levels.

La présente invention convient particulièrement à la purification des gaz d'échappement provenant de moteurs Diesel à mélange pauvre et de dimensions relativement importantes. Un injecteur (20) piloté par ordinateur injecte de manière intermittente une quantité optimale d'un fluide réducteur des oxydes d'azote (NOx) dans le conduit d'échappement (11) du moteur (12). Cette quantité optimale correspond à une quantité qui devrait permettre d'obtenir des niveaux de réduction de NOx optimaux pour une condition de fonctionnement du moteur et une température d'échappement données. Un ordinateur (16) détecte périodiquement ladite condition de fonctionnement du moteur et la température d'échappement et calcule la quantité appropriée à injecter. En prévoyant des catalyseurs d'oxydation et d'élimination des oxydes d'azote en aval de l'injecteur (20), on confère au système de purification des gaz d'échappement (10) de la présente invention l'aptitude à réduire considérablement la teneur en NOx desdits gaz tout en maintenant les émissions d'hydrocarbures à des niveaux acceptables.
