A pigment dispersion useful for forming aqueous coating compositions containing metallic flake pigment, an aqueous carrier and a graft copolymer dispersant (binder); wherein the graft copolymer has a weight average molecular weight of about 5,000-100,000 and comprises a polymeric backbone and macromonomer side chains attached to the backbone wherein (1) the polymeric backbone is formed of polymerized ethylenically unsaturated monomers and (2) the side chains are macomonomers that are attached to the backbone at a single terminal point and formed from polymerized ethylenically unsaturated monomers that are polymerized in the presence of a cobalt chain transfer agent and have a weight average molecular weight of about 1,000-30,000; wherein the graft copolymer contains about 2 to 70 % by weight, based on the weight of the graft copolymer, of polymerized constituents having a phosphate moiety and phospheric acid moieties that are polymerized into the backbone, the side chains or both and the polymer is neutralized with an inorganic base or an amine; and the metallic flake pigment is present in a binder to pigment weight ratio of least 10/100; coating compositions containing the novel dispersion, the graft copolymer and the process for making the graft copolymer and pigment dispersions are part of the invention.

L'invention concerne une dispersion pigmentaire utile pour former des compositions aqueuses de revêtement contenant un pigment lamellaire métallique, un support aqueux et un dispersant copolymère greffé (liant); ce copolymère greffé présente un poids moléculaire moyen au poids d'environ 5000-100000 et comprend un squelette polymère auquel sont accolées des chaînes latérales macromonomères, où (1) le squelette polymère est formé de monomères éthyléniquement insaturés polymérisés et (2) les chaînes latérales sont des macromonomères accolés au squelette au niveau d'un point terminal unique et formés à partir de monomères éthyléniquement insaturés qui sont polymérisés en présence d'un agent de transfert de chaîne de cobalt et présentent un poids moléculaire moyen au poids d'environ 1000-30 000; le copolymère greffé contient environ 2 à 70 % en poids, sur la base de son propre poids, de constituants polymérisés possédant un fragment phosphate et des fragments acide phosphorique qui sont polymérisés pour donner le squelette, les chaînes latérales ou les deux, et le polymère est neutralisé avec une base inorganique ou une amine; et le pigment lamellaire métallique est présent dans un rapport en poids liant/pigment égal à au moins 10/100; l'invention concerne également des compositions de revêtement contenant cette nouvelle dispersion, le copolymère greffé ainsi que le procédé pour fabriquer ce dernier et les dispersions pigmentaires.
