Method for applying an amorphous boron-based protective coating to an optical fiber comprising an optical core enclosed in an optical sheath, both made of a silica-based material. The method is characterized in that boron is applied to the surface of the optical fiber by chemical vapour phase deposition at a temperature of 1050-1250 °C, through the reduction of boron chloride BCl3 with H2 hydrogen. The protective amorphous boron coating (7) imparts mechanical protection to the fiber, and enhanced abrasion resistance, enabling the fiber (1) to be used in high capacity and highly compact optical cables. The thickness of the resin coating can be virtually halved in relation to that required when a protective carbon coating is used, and can even be eliminated. The coating (7) further provides sealing properties comparable to those provided by a carbon coating.

Procédé d'élaboration d'un revêtement protecteur à base de bore amorphe sur une fibre optique comprenant un c÷ur optique entouré d'une gaine optique, tous deux en un matériau à base de silice, caractérisé en ce que l'apport de bore à la surface de ladite fibre optique est effectué par voie chimique à partir de la phase vapeur à une température comprise entre 1050 et 1250 °C, par réduction du chlorure de bore BCl3 par l'hydrogène H2. Le revêtement protecteur (7) de bore amorphe assure la protection mécanique de la fibre, conférant ainsi à cette dernière une résistance à l'abrasion accrue permettant donc l'utilisation de la fibre (1) dans des câbles optiques de grande capacité et de grande compacité, l'épaisseur du revêtement de résine pouvant pratiquement être diminuée de moitié par rapport à ce qui est nécessaire lorsque l'on utilise un revêtement protecteur de carbone, voire même être supprimée. Le revêtement (7) assure en outre une étanchéité comparable à celle assurée par le revêtement de carbone.
