Application of wax to fruit can be controlled by groups of fruit in a conveyor system (14) to optimize the protective and cosmetic effects of the wax application and to efficiently utilize the wax notwithstanding variations in size, texture, nature or number of the fruit, the type(s) of wax or the processing environment, by providing an intelligent wax controller. The wax controller has a camera (12) which detects fruit (112) passing through a field of view defined by an optical housing in which the camera is fixed. Particularly if the camera is a line-scan camera, two-dimensional pixel maps of the fruit passing through the viewing area are assembled and image processed to provide distinct pixel images even when the fruit are touching. The entire width of the conveyor belt is detected during each detection time. The diameter of the fruit for each of the separated images is then determined, from which the total surface area of the fruit passing under the viewing area is computed. Based on this computation a plurality of variable stroke pumps and wax nozzles are each individually controlled at appropriate positions across the width of the conveyor system to apply the appropriate amount of wax to the fruit then passing under the wax applicator nozzles.

Dans un convoyeur (14) de fruits, on peut réguler la pulvérisation de cire par groupes de fruits de façon à en optimiser les effets protecteurs et esthétiques et à employer la cire efficacement malgré les variations de taille, de texture, de nature et de nombre des fruits et les différents types de cires et de modes de traitement, en recourant à un régulateur 'intelligent'. Ce dernier est pourvu d'une caméra (12) qui détecte les fruits (112) passant dans un champ de vision délimité par l'enceinte optique à l'intérieur de laquelle la caméra est montée. En particulier avec une caméra à balayage linéaire, on peut former des cartes de pixels bidimensionnelles des fruits défilant dans le champ de vision de la caméra et on assemble et traite ces cartes de manière à fournir des images de pixels distinctes même lorsque les fruits se touchent. La largeur totale du convoyeur se trouve prise en compte à chaque cycle de détection. Pour chaque image séparée, on détermine la diamètre du fruit, ce qui permet de calculer la surface totale des fruits traversant le champ de vision. Sur la base de ces calculs, on commande individuellement plusieurs pompes à débit variable et leurs buses distributrices de cire, placées en des points appropriés de la largeur du convoyeur de manière à appliquer la quantité de cire appropriée lorsque les fruits passent sous les buses.
