In an optical transmission system incorporating a passive optical network (PON), fault detection is effected by a time domain reflectometer technique in which the system transmitter generates a sequence having statistical properties equivalent to a continuous random binary sequence. A delayed copy of the sequence is correlated with an echo of the sequence reflected from a fault, the time delay required to effect correlation giving an indication of the fault location.

Dans un système de transmission optique comprenant un réseau optique passif (PON), la localisation d'erreurs est effectuée à l'aide d'une technique à réflectomètre temporel selon laquelle l'émetteur du système génère une séquence ayant des propriétés statistiques équivalentes à une séquence binaire aléatoire continue. Une copie différée de la séquence est corrélée avec un écho de la séquence réfléchie à partir d'une erreur, le temps nécessaire pour effectuer la corrélation donnant une indication de l'emplacement de l'erreur.
