A solid-state image intensifier is provided with a thin film photoconductive layer and an electroluminescent layer which contains a polymer light emitting diode (LED) material. The photoconductive layer is a thin film which does not suffer from electrical breakdown because a low voltage is applied to the electrodes, said low voltage being sufficient to cause luminescence of the electroluminescence layer. As the photoconductive layer is thin the time response of the solid state image intensifier is shortened and its spatial resolution is improved. The colour of the light given off by the polymer LED material is controlled by suitable chemical substitutions to the polymer. Consequently, the colour of the light given off may be adapted to the colour dependence of the sensitivity of an image sensor for detecting the output light of the solid-state image intensifier.

L'invention concerne un intensificateur d'images à état solide, ayant une couche photoconductrice mince et une couche électroluminescente qui contient un matériau polymère du type utilisé pour les diodes électroluminescentes. La couche photoconductrice est un mince film qui n'est pas sujet à des ruptures électriques, à cause de la faible tension appliquée aux électrodes, la faible tension en question étant suffisante pour provoquer la luminescence de la couche électroluminescente. Comme la couche photoconductrice est mince, le temps de réponse de l'intensificateur d'images à état solide est plus court et la résolution spatiale est améliorée. La couleur de la lumière émise par le substrat électroluminescent est ajustée par des substitutions chimiques appropriées sur le polymère. La couleur de la lumière émise peut ainsi être adaptée au profil de sensibilité d'un détecteur d'image utilisé pour détecter la lumière émise par l'intensificateur d'images à état solide.
