A method of reducing the volume of radioactive metal waste containing zirconium alloy by sealing it into a capsule C, which is then compressed for volume reduction. The method comprises the steps of transferring the capsule C into a treatment chamber (31) having a capacity somewhat greater than the capsule (C); sucking air inside the treatment chamber (31) under a sealed state into which the capsule (C) is transferred and establishing substantially vacuum thereinside; reducing the volume of the treatment chamber (31) under the substantial vacuum state and compressing the capsule (C); and removing the compressed capsule from the treatment chamber (31). The present invention provides also an apparatus for practicing this method.

Procédé de réduction du volume de déchets de métaux radioactifs contenant un alliage de zirconium, qui consiste à enfermer hermétiquement lesdits déchets dans une capsule C, qu'on comprime ensuite, afin d'en réduire le volume. Ce procédé comprend les étapes de transfert de la capsule C dans une chambre de traitement (31), dont la capacité est quelque peu supérieure à celle de la capsule C; d'aspiration de l'air à l'intérieur de la chambre de traitement (31) hermétiquement fermée, dans laquelle la capsule C a été transférée et dans laquelle on fait le vide; de réduction du volume de la chambre de traitement (31) pratiquement sous vide et de compression de la capsule C; de suppression de la capsule comprimée de la chambre de traitement (31). L'invention concerne également un dispositif de mise en application de ce procédé.
