To locate a preselected symbol in a two-dimensional image, a single main probe (10) of a line of pixels extending across a boundary box of the field of view is conducted to find a first color transition. Once a first transition is found, a second probe (20) is conducted to search in a second line of pixels for a second color transition. If no second color transition is found, the main probe resumes searching along the line of pixels for another first color transition from where it had stopped. If a second transition is found, then a plurality of additional probes (30) are conducted to search for transitions in respective third lines of pixels to locate and define the edge located by the main and second probes. The located and defined portion of the symbol is tested for validity.

Pour localiser un symbole choisi au préalable dans une image bidimensionnelle, on utilise une seule sonde principale (10) d'une ligne de pixels s'étendant à travers un cadre de contour du champ de vision, pour trouver une première transition de couleur. Une fois que la première transition est trouvée, on utilise une seconde sonde (20) pour rechercher dans une seconde ligne de pixels une seconde transition de couleur. Si on ne trouve aucune seconde transition de couleur, la sonde principale reprend la recherche le long de la ligne de pixels d'une autre première transition de couleurs, en partant du point où elle s'est arrêtée. Lorsqu'on trouve une seconde transition, une pluralité de sondes additionnelles (30) sont mises en ÷uvre pour chercher des transitions sur les troisièmes lignes de pixels respectives, pour localiser et définir le bord localisé par la sonde principale et par la seconde sonde. La validité de la portion localisée et définie du symbole est ensuite testée.
