Abstract

An intelligent communications coprocessor connects computer workstations to moderate-bandwidth (up to 2 megabits/second) digital communications services. In particular, such communications services include but are not limited to Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) or Private-Branch Exchange (PBX) communications facilities. The communications coprocessor takes advantage of certain host resources including, preferably, signal processing capabilities of the computer, the computer's power supply and a generalized, high-speed computer/peripheral serial interface. System cost for digital communications over such communications facilities is therefore reduced. Furthermore, the communications coprocessor can be used to support the transmission of arbitrary real-time, synchronous data streams as encountered in voice and video transmission services. This capability is required for many applications including voice recognition, text-to-speech, and videoconferencing. The communications coprocessor is tightly coupled to the host computer so as to allow real-time digital signal processing of the real-time data stream conveyed by the coprocessor. Finally, the invention can be dynamically reconfigured using an associated host-coprocessor protocol, allowing software upgrades and adaptation to special communications requirements.

Un coprocesseur de communications intelligent relie des postes de travail informatiques à des services de communications numériques à largeur de bande modérée (jusqu'à 2 mégabits/seconde). De tels services font intervenir, entre autres installations de communications, celles du réseau numérique à intégration de services (RNIS ou les autocommutateurs privés. Ce coprocesseur de télécommunications tire parti de certaines ressources centrales incluant de préférence les capacités de traitement de signaux de l'ordinateur, son alimentation électrique et une interface sérielle généraliste ordinateur à grande vitesse/périphériques. Avec de telle installations de communications, les coûts systémiques des communications numériques sont donc réduits. De plus, on peut utiliser ce coprocesseur de communications pour transmettre des flux de données synchrones arbitraires en temps réel tels que ceux des services de transmission vocale et vidéo, ce qui est exigé pour de nombreuses utilisations comprenant la reconnaissance vocale, la transcription vocale de textes et les vidéo-conférences. Ce coprocesseur est étroitement liè à l'ordinateur central pour permettre le traitement de signaux numériques en temps réel pour des flux de données numériques qu'il transmet en temps réel. Il peut enfin être reconfiguré de façon dynamique avec un protocole ordinateur central coprocesseur, ce qui permet d'utiliser des logiciels améliorés et l'adaptation à des besoins de communications spéciales.
