The invention relates to an illumination system (1) for supplying a polarized radiation beam. To this end, the illumination system (1) successively comprises a radiation source unit (3) for supplying an illumination beam, a polarizing element (11) for splitting the radiation beam into two mutually perpendicularly and linearly polarized sub-beams and a polarization-rotating element (19) in one of the sub-beams. The polarizing element (11) is constituted by at least one optical transparent plate (13) having a refractive index n0 with a first face and a second face, while at least one of these faces is provided with an optically thin layer (15) having a refractive index n1 which is larger than n0. A reflector (17) for reflecting this sub-beam in the same direction of propagation as that of the other sub-beam is arranged in the light path of at least one of the sub-beams. The chief ray of the beam incident on the plate (13), which beam has a narrow divergence, and the normal (12) on the plate (13) enclose an angle which is substantially equal to the Brewster angle which applies to the transition between the optically thin layer and a medium surrounding the polarizing element (11).

L'invention concerne un système d'éclairage (1) servant à produire un faisceau de rayonnement polarisé. A cet effet, ce système d'éclairage (1) est composé successivement d'un ensemble source de rayonnement (3) servant à produire un faisceau d'éclairage, d'un élément de polarisation (11) servant à diviser le faisceau de rayonnement en deux sous-faisceaux perpendiculaires l'un par rapport à l'autre et polarisés de façon linéaire, ainsi que d'un élément de polarisation rotatif (19) situé dans un des sous-faisceaux. L'élément de polarisation (11) est constitué par au moins une plaque optique transparente (13) possédant un indice de réfraction no et pourvue d'une première face, ainsi que d'une deuxième face, au moins une desdites faces comportant une couche optique mince (15) possédant un indice de réfraction n1 supérieur à no. Un réflecteur (17) servant à réfléchir ce sous-faisceau dans le même sens de propagation que celui de l'autre sous-faisceau, est situé dans le trajet lumineux d'au moins des sous-faisceaux. Le rayon principal du faisceau incident sur la plaque (13), ledit faisceau présentant une divergence étroite, et la perpendiculaire (12) à la plaque délimitent un angle sensiblement égal à l'angle de Brewster, qui s'applique à la transition entre la couche mince optique et un moyen entourant l'élément de polarisation (11).
