Apparatus and methods for detecting and correcting various fault conditions in an operating Coriolis effect mass flowmeter. The present invention receives information from an operating Coriolis mass flowmeter and compares the information to threshold signatures representing various fault conditions. When a fault condition is dectected, output signals are applied to inform an operator and to control the mass flow rate through the flowmeter to correct the fault condition. Specific methods of the present invention detect the presence of a crack in the flow tubes and stop the flow of material to prevent release of the material through cracked flow tubes. Other methods of the present invention detect the void fraction of material flowing through the flow tubes, compute a corrected actual mass flow rate, and control the mass flow rate through the flowmeter to compensate for the effects of the void fraction.

Cette invention se rapporte à un appareil et à des procédés pour détecter et corriger divers états défectueux dans un débitmètre de masse à effet de Coriolis en fonctionnement. Un tel appareil reçoit les informations provenant d'un débitmètre de masse à effet de Coriolis en fonctionnement et compare ces informations avec des signatures seuils représentant divers états défectueux. Lorsqu'un état défectueux est détecté, des signaux de sortie sont produits pour informer l'opérateur et pour réguler le débit de masse à travers le débitmètre, afin de corriger cet état défectueux. Dans des procédés spécifiques de cette invention, on détecte la présence d'une craquelure dans les tubes d'écoulement et on interrompt l'écoulement de matières pour empêcher tout dégagement de cette matière à travers des tubes d'écoulement fêlés. Dans d'autres procédés de cette invention, on détecte la fraction de vide de la matière passant par les tubes d'écoulement, on calcule un débit de masse effectif corrigé et on régule le débit de masse à travers le débitmètre, afin de compenser les effets de cette fraction de vide.
