Abstract

A titanium engine valve (10) is fabricated with discrete head (10) and stem portions (15), preferably joined by inertia welding and/or diffusion bonding. The joint (32) between the head and stem portions is located well up on the valve stem so that it is not exposed below the valve guide (30). The head portion including a fillet region and lower stem region is composed of a first material comprising titanium, such as a conventional high strength titanium alloy. Alternatively, the head portion may consist of a cast or forged heat treated TIC. The stem portion which is not directly exposed to the hostile environment of the combustion chamber is composed of a second material comprising titanium, such as mill annealed titanium alloy rod stock. The resulting valve is, therefore, much less expensive to manufacture than a conventional titanium valve without sacrificing any mechanical characteristics in the portions of the valve subjected to high stress and temperature.

On fabrique une soupape en titane (10), destinée à un moteur, dotée d'une tête (10) et d'une tige (15) séparées solidarisées, de préférence, par soudage par friction et/ou liaison par diffusion. Le raccord (32) reliant la tête et la tige est situé très haut sur cette dernière de façon à n'être pas exposé au-dessous du guide de soupape (30). La tête, qui comporte une zone incurvée et le bras de la tige, est composée d'un premier matériau contenant du titane tel qu'un alliage de titane conventionnel à haute résistance, ou bien peut consister en un composé intermétallique de titane coulé ou forgé et traité à chaud. La tige, qui n'est pas exposée directement à l'environnement hostile d'une chambre de combustion, est composée d'un deuxième matériau comprenant un titane, tel qu'une barre ronde d'alliage de titane recuit par le fournisseur. La soupape résultante se révèle donc bien moins chère à fabriquer qu'une soupape en titane conventionnelle, sans qu'on sacrifie aucune caractéristique mécanique des parties de soupape soumises à des contraintes et températures élevées.
