In a hydrometallurgical process for converting zinc sulfide in an ore containing zinc sulfide, the zinc sulfide being chemically converted at elevated temperatures to ZnSO4.xH2O which crystallizes substantially in the monohydrate form as ZnSO4.H2O in a conversion solution having a high concentration of H2SO4, the improvement comprises: (i) selecting an ore which contains both zinc sulfide and copper sulfide, the ore containing greater than 1 % by weight of copper; (ii) contacting the zinc sulfide/copper sulfide ore with a conversion solution comprises a concentration of sulfuric acid selected from the range of about 45 % by weight up to about 70 % by weight of the conversion solution and at the elevated temperature in the range of 90 °C to less than boiling point of the conversion solution for the selected concentration of sulfuric acid; (iii) ensuring a reducing condition in the conversion solution, by virtue of the concentration of H2SO4, temperature, and maintenance of atmospheric pressure, to produce continuously sufficient H2S to preclude oxidation of the copper sulfide; (iv) maintaining the conversion solution at the elevated temperature and at the range of concentration of the sulfuric acid to ensure continued formation of the crystals of ZnSO4.H2O until substantially all available ZnS is chemically converted; and (v) separating the ZnSO4.H2O crystals and remaining solids of the ore from the conversion solution.

Dans un procédé hydrométallurgique servant à convertir du sulfure de zinc contenu dans un minerai, par voie chimique et à des températures élevées, en ZnSO4.xH2O qui se cristallise sensiblement sous la forme d'un monohydrate en ZnSO4.H2O dans une solution de conversion à concentration de H2SO4 élevée, le perfectionnement consiste à: (i) choisir un minerai qui contient à la fois du sulfure de zinc et du sulfure de cuivre, tel que la teneur en cuivre soit supérieure à 1 %; (ii) mettre le minerai contenant du sulfure de zinc/sulfure de cuivre en contact avec une solution de conversion comprenant une concentration d'acide sulfurique dans une plage d'environ 45 % en poids à environ 70 % en poids de la solution de conversion et à une température élevée comprise dans une plage allant de 90 °C à une température inférieure au point d'ébullition de ladite solution de conversion pour la concentration choisie d'acide sulfurique; (iii) créer une condition réductrice dans la solution de conversion, en vertu de la concentration de H2SO4, de la température et du maintien de la pression atmosphérique, afin de produire en continu suffisamment de H2S pour prévenir l'oxydation du sulfure de cuivre; (iv) maintenir la solution de conversion à la température élevée et dans la plage de concentration de l'acide sulfurique afin d'assurer la formation continue de cristaux de ZnSO4.H2O jusqu'à ce que pratiquement tout le ZnS soit converti par voie chimique; et (v) séparer les cristaux de ZnSO4.H2O et les solides résiduels du minerai de la solution de conversion.
