Abstract

Substrates are disclosed having an ultra-smooth surface finish thereon rendering them useful in making high density magnetic storage components, such as a computer hard disk or a thin-film head which can read and/or write data on such disks. The substrates are comprised of a non-oxide ceramic base (20) which is coated with a smoothing layer (30) comprised of an amorphous, non-stoichiometric silicon carbide corresponding to the formula SiCx, wherein x is the molar ratio of carbon to silicon and is greater than 1. Also disclosed are processes for making the substrates and components.

Cette invention se rapporte à des substrats ayant un fini de surface ultra-lisse, ce qui les rend utiles dans la fabrication de composants magnétiques pour supports de données haute densité, tels que les disques durs d'ordinateur ou les têtes à minces films servant à l'écriture et/ou à la lecture de données sur ces disques. Lesdits substrats se composent d'une base céramique non-oxyde (20), qui est recouverte d'une couche de lissage (30) constituée par un carbure de silicium amorphe non st÷chiométrique correspondant à la formule SiCx, dans laquelle x représente le rapport molaire entre le carbone et le silicium, ce rapport étant supérieur à 1. Cette invention se rapporte également à des procédés pour fabriquer ces substrats et ces composants.
