A high reliability instrument system includes a test generator (26) for applying a test condition signal (29) to the instrument (10) and for determining whether the instrument (10) properly responds to the test condition, and apparatus (18) for inhibiting the generation of an instrument output in response to such testing. The instrument system may be include a gap-type ultrasonic instrument (230) with the test condition comprising a pulse applied to one crystal (240a), the effects of which are detected at the other crystal (240b) to determine sensor integrity. The system may be implemented as a quasi-redundant system having radio frequency instrument (304a) and an ultrasonic instrument (302a) disposed to monitor the same condition, in which both instruments may be connected to a single type of receiver (314a) and tested in response to the same type of signal generated by such receiver.

Système de contrôle à fiabilité élevée, comprenant un générateur de vérification (26) servant à appliquer un signal de condition de vérification (29) à l'instrument (10) et à déterminer si ledit instrument (10) réagit correctement à la condition de vérification, ainsi qu'un dispositif (18) servant à inhiber la génération d'une sortie d'instrument en réaction à ladite vérification. Ce système peut comprendre un instrument ultrasonore de type discontinu (230), la condition de vérification comportant une impulsion appliquée à un quartz (240a), dont les effets sont détectés au niveau de l'autre quartz (240b), afin de déterminer l'intégrité du détecteur. Ce système peut être mis en application en tant que système quasi-redondant possédant un instrument haute fréquence (304a) et un instrument ultrasonore (302a) conçus pour contrôler la même condition, ces deux instruments pouvant être couplés à un type unique de récepteur (314a) et vérifiés en réponse au même type de signal généré par ledit récepteur.
