Abstract

A personal digital assistant module with a local CPU (element 11), memory (13), I/O interface, and host interface (14') for interfacing and providing direct communication to a host computer (66). The host computer has a docking bay, wherein upon docking a docking protocol controls access by the host to the module. In one embodiment the personal digital assistant has an expansion port (20) and expansion peripheral devices (19) may be connected. A number of host systems compatible with the personal digital assistants are disclosed in various embodiments. An additional feature in some embodiments is a scanner system using photosensitive film technology which uses the display of the module or host as a light source.

Un module d'assistant personnel numérique comprend une unité centrale de traitement locale (élément 11), une mémoire (13), une interface d'entrée/sortie, et une interface de système central (14') pour interfaçage et communication directe avec un ordinateur central (66). Ce dernier présente une station d'accueil telle qu'au moment de l'accueil, un protocole d'accueil contrôle l'accès au module par l'ordinateur central. Dans une variante, cet assistant personnel numérique comporte un port d'extension (20) et des dispositifs périphériques d'extension (19) peuvent lui être raccordés. Dans différentes variantes, on décrit plusieurs systèmes centraux compatibles avec un tel assistant personnel numérique. Une caractéristique supplémentaire de certaines variantes consiste en un scanner, doté de la technique des couches photosensibles, qui utilise comme source lumineuse l'afficheur du module ou de l'ordinateur central.
